Dato (Dr) Asariah graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Geography) degree from the University of Malaya in 1975, Diploma in Education ( University of Malaya 1976) and Masters of Science ( Curriculum and Instruction) from the University of Wisconsin USA in 1983. She has attended courses, seminars and workshops at Harvard Graduate School of Education, University of Harvard; Institute of Education, University of London, UK; University of Wales, Cardiff; University of Hiroshima, Japan and Regional education and management centres in Asia such as Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia.
Working Experience
Dato (Dr) Asariah Mior Shaharuddin is a prominent figure in Malaysian teacher education. She is known for her work in teacher professional development and was the key figure in the upgrading of all Malaysian Teacher Training Colleges to become degree awarding institutions known as Institute of Teacher Education, Malaysia which is now offering full time Bachelor of Teaching degree courses. Prior to her retirement in 2011, she was the Deputy Director General of Education, Ministry of Education Malaysia. As Deputy DG in charge of Teacher Professional Development, she was primarily responsible for policy, planning, finance and human resource development matters. During her time in the ministry, she was able to put into fruition efforts of producing effective teachers by various upgrading programmes, reforms and establishing partnerships with local and foreign universities from the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. In 2011, she was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Principalship Studies, University of Malaya. After her retirement from the MoE, Dato (Dr) Asariah has been appointed as BOT member of Yayasan Guru Malaysia Berhad, Yayasan JOHAWAKI and serves as education consultant to a few private education organizations. In 2011 she was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Principalship Studies, University of Malaya.
