Datuk Anuar has also held the positions of Vice President of Oil Business, Vice President of Human Resource Management and Executive Vice President of Gas and Power Business, PETRONAS. Datuk Anuar previously served PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad as its Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer from 1 July 1998 until 1 October 2002. He was appointed as Chairman of PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad from 3 October 2005 to 17 August 2010. He was also the Chairman of PETRONAS Gas Berhad from 17 August 2010 to 15 May 2014. He was a member of the PETRONAS Executive Committee, PETRONAS Management Committee, and on the Board of PETRONAS, until he retired from PETRONAS on 15 April 2014.
