Onus now on Muhyiddin to bear all the source of his political funding By Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy

Author:   |    Publish date:

BESIDES his arrogance and rudeness, Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin must explain source of his political funding.

His former aide Datuk Dr Marzuki Mohamad has sought to clear the events that transpired in the national palace about the unity government.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong had invited both Muhyiddin and Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – at different times – to discuss the possibility of forming a unity government.

The meeting was first held with Muhyiddin. In the meeting, according to Marzuki, Muhyiddin was not agreeable to form a unity government with PH.

Since unity government was not part of the mandate given by those who supported PN, Muhyiddin was not agreeable.

So, too, was the PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang. The Bersatu president even signed an “agreement” prepared by the national palace which contained the provision of prime minister (PM) by rotation.

Since Muhyiddin was not agreeable to the idea of a unity government, he excused himself from His Majesty to leave the palace without even having had the courtesy to talk to the media.

Muhyiddin’s refusal to accept a unity government rendered what he signed null and void. He was upset not because of the idea of unity government that was thrust on him.

Rather it was the Agong’s reluctance to accept the 114 statutory declarations (SDs) that was his source of grievance.

SDs alone not enough

This is the reason why His Majesty needed more time – a matter of one or two days – to determine not only the veracity of the SDs but to actually determine Muhyiddin’s coalition had the majority.

Time was needed to determine which of the two leaders – Anwar or Muhyiddin – commanded majority support.

It is difficult to understand if the idea of unity government proposed by the Agong was abhorrent to Muhyiddin, and why he signed the “agreement” that integrated the provision of PM by rotation in the first place.

If he had rejected the idea of unity government, why was there the need to sign the “agreement” in the first place?

It makes no sense except to Muhyiddin and his aide. The idea of gathering as many SDs as possible is not definite route to attain the post of PM. It is just the easiest way out with or without basis.

His Majesty was well aware of how SDs could be abused for political gains. Knowing Muhyiddin’s greed for power, it was perfectly rational on the part of the Agong not to accept them at the face value.

Political funding source

As Anwar was gaining ground in terms of support, the Agong was well aware of what needs to be done. The calling of rulers meeting provided the perfect platform for the Agong to endorse Anwar as the PM.

By the time Anwar took his oath, he had the majority – more than simple – with support from Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and others.

Is Marzuki trying to whitewash Muhyiddin for his arrogance towards the Agong? Rejecting the idea of unity government was itself bad enough for Muhyiddin who was the principal architect that brought down the former legitimate government of PH.

Well, if he really was against the unity government, why the need to sign the “agreement” that provided for the rotation of prime minister’s post.

Muhyiddin or his aide cannot go around saying that he was forced. Muhyiddin cannot have the cake and eat it at the same time.

Malaysians are tired of the antics and opportunism of Muhyiddin and his supporters in PAS. Perhaps it is about time that he explained the queries as to where he obtained the colossal funds to finance the recent parliamentary election.

I am sure, despite all the talk of heaven and earth, PAS cannot deny that it was the main beneficiary of the funds. – Nov 28, 2022
